These are my non-negotiables when serving a smoked salmon and/or lox spread: thinly sliced red onion, sliced cucumber, sliced and salted tomato, capers, scallion or chive cream cheese. My hot take is that I like my bagel with all of the fixins’ (cream cheese, tomato, cucumber, red onion, lots of capers, and dill), but no smoked salmon. I’ve never been a huge fan of salmon in any preparation, cooked, raw, or cured, so it’s no surprise that I wouldn’t want it for breakfast. I’ll enjoy a bite or 2 but past that I get the ick.
