One of my earliest memories in the kitchen is making Halloween-shaped sugar cookies with my aunt. I had so much fun punching out all the little shapes that I immediately became obsessed. For months afterward, I begged my mom to pick up a bag of Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix on every grocery run. This was also the first time I experienced cooking as a form of leisure and entertainment rather than pure necessity, so these little bat shaped cookies hold a very special place in my heart <3 Of course these cookies are far more delicious than the ones from my childhood (no offense Betty Crocker). I’ve incorporated black sesame paste for a subtle nuttiness that pairs perfectly with the rich dark cocoa powder, also naturally giving the dough a spooky jet black hue. I love these cookies as is, but if you want to have some fun and decorate them I’ve included a royal icing recipe below. Whatever you do please don’t try to decorate these using store bought icing. It never works and is always ugly I’m sorry.
